Artist Ayzit Bostan

Questionnaire: Ayzit Bostan

What does Munich taste like, Mrs. Bostan?

Munich is shaped by extraordinary women. In our questionnaire we would like to introduce a few of them. This time: the fashion designer and costume-maker Ayzit Bostan. Born in Ankara, the fashion designer attended the master school of fashion in Munich and started her own label in 1995.

Bostan was awarded the prize for design of the City of Munich in 1997, her studio is located in the main station district. Her bag creations for Philipp Bree, PB0110 are internationally known. She works as a visual artist and teaches as a professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

Were you born in Munich or did you move here?
I moved here. I was born in Turkey and moved here with my parents in 1988.

In which district are you at home?
I live in the Dreimühlenviertel. It's a very central place to live, but it's also close to the Isar so you can get out of the city really quickly.

What does Munich taste like?
It tastes like Charles Schumann's fried potatoes in his bar at the Hofgarten.

What does Munich sound like?
It sounds like the DJ and producer duo Public Possession, made up of Valentino Betz and Marvin Schuhmann. They both hail from Munich, and are playing music worldwide.

Munich is the only city where ...
… you'd most want to live in Germany. The city has a high quality of life – it offers a wealth of culture, is beautiful, and there are some great places to eat.

Which Munich lady should everyone know?
Liesl Karlstadt, who was one of the city's best known actresses and cabaret performers. Together with Karl Valentin she formed one of the most successful comedian duos.

Your favourite Bavarian word?
"Spatzl" (darling), because it was by Helmut Fischer, and he was one of the coolest people Munich has ever produced.

The most attractive building in the city?
The most beautiful place in Munich is the Hofgarten. My favourite restaurant is there, as well as the Kunstverein, my favourite place for exhibitions in the city of Munich.

Isar or Eisbach?
The Isar, but a bit out of the city. There are too many people in the city, it's more relaxed outside.

Beer garden or bar?
Bar, because I prefer wine and long drinks to beer. Going out to a bar is also more elegant.

Philharmonic orchestra or brass band music?
Brass band music in the daytime, I like the Philharmonic in the evening.

A weekend in the mountains or by the lake?
Preferably Lake Walchensee because you have both there. I like going to the lakes, but I also enjoy hiking.

The best place in Munich to impress visitors?
The top of the Olympia Tower – the view impresses me even if I don't have visitors.

What is the best place in Munich for an after-work beer?
Schumann’s Tagesbar, because it's a great place for people-watching.

The best place in Munich for a romantic date?
I think the grassy area in front of the Glyptothek and the Alte Pinakothek is very beautiful. You can sit on a blanket there with a little picnic.

The best place in Munich to think?
I can think best when I'm on my own, and that's usually when I'm at home. It's where I feel most at peace.

The best place in Munich for music lovers?
I like to go to Milla for concerts.

The best place in Munich to experience culture?
The Lenbachhaus has a wonderful collection and a very good rotation of exhibitions.

The best place in Munich if you are longing for Italy?
The Grano is one of the best pizzerias in Munich and is centrally located right next to the Stadtmuseum.
