Questionnaire: Julius Brantner

Isar or Eisbach, Julius Brantner?

A city's character is shaped by its residents, and Munich is home to some truly exceptional individuals. We have enlisted a few remarkable talents as Munich ambassadors and would like to introduce them through this questionnaire. This time featuring: Julius Brantner, founder of the bakery of the same name.

Were you born in Munich or did you move here?

I became a Munich resident in 2019.

The taste of Munich:

Munich tastes of pretzels, Vesperbrett (snack platters) and beer.

The sound of Munich:

Servus!

The smell of Munich:

When I cycle to work at night in summer, I often catch the malt scent from the city breweries.

Munich is the only city where you can ...

... surf a wave in the heart of the city.

My favourite word in Bavarian dialect:

Servus!

The city's most beautiful building:

The Roiger House, designed by architect Max Ostenrieder, where my pretzel bakery is situated in Munich's old town.

As a district ambassador, I would like to dispel this misconception about Munich:

That there are only snobs in Munich. I have met a lot of great people here and made friends. My team is a colourful mix of different nationalities and personalities, and everyone contributes. That makes me happy every day.

The catchiest Munich song:

Even if it's not my taste in music: “Ohne dich schlaf ich heut Nacht nicht ein“ (I will not fall asleep without you tonight) by Münchner Freiheit.

Isar or Eisbach?

Eisbach (man-made river), mainly because it is closer to my bakery in Schwabing. But my favourite place is the Maria-Einsiedel-Bad (natural pool).

Beer garden or Bar?

Bar! In my opinion, the best drinks are served at Goldene Bar.

Philharmonic orchestra or brass band music?

Neither: I'm into techno and electro music. It energises me and my team while baking and wakes us up in the mornings.

Lederhosen/Dirndl: yes or no?

Leather trousers! I love to wear them.

A weekend in the mountains or by the lake?

It depends on the season, but I rarely do either.

When I'm away from Munich, I often proudly share this fact about the city:

That the Englischer Garten is larger than the Central Park in New York City.

The best place in Munich to impress visitors?

Weinhaus Neuner in the old town – Munich's oldest wine house with the best schnitzel in town.

The best place in Munich to have a Sundowner?

Best on Sundays on the terrace of the Goldene Bar in the Haus der Kunst (art gallery).

The best place in Munich for a romantic date?

Landersdorfer & Innerhofer. Great, seasonal food without much fuss – and you can choose various menus, depending on how long you want your evening to linger.

The most beautiful walk?

I prefer cycling.

When I seek tranquillity, my sanctuary is ...

... sports with my coach and friend Erich.

Local Love: Altstadt

The city centre

There are few other cities which are as focused around their centres as Munich – but unlike other city centres, Munich’s Altstadt is a place that’s actually full of life being lived.

Local Love: Schlachthof

The charm of the casual

What makes Munich’s Schlachthofviertel so unique? A lively underground cultural scene and actually still a slaughterhouse.. Could it possibly have any more urban cool?!

Local Love: Haidhausen - French Quarter

Live and let live

The so called French Quarter as a part of Haidhausen is Munich’s most liberal district. It is a place where people appreciate quality without feeling the need to show off about it.
